ATOMIC PHYSICS AT THE CDU.

These pages describe the research carried out by Dr Jim Mitroy and collaborators at the Charles Darwin University. The research is in the general area of atomic structure and electron(positron)-atom collisions. For the last five years our energy has been focussed on two topics, (a) understanding the interactions that occur between positrons and atoms (b) describing the long range between two atoms. Research on these topics is intensely computational.

Ph.D. Scholarship available.

The group has funding to support 1 or 2 Ph.D. scholarships do research in positron physics. Please email me at jxm107@rsphysse.anu.edu.au if your are interested.

Research Topics and research group information.

Positron-hydrogen scattering
The positron-hydrogen system is one of the simplest 3-body scattering systems.

Positronic Atoms
It is possible for positrons to bind to atoms and form electronically stable states. These states do decay by the process of electron-positron annihilation. Besides the web-page, a general review article is available. This research has been instrumental in understanding the dynamics of positron annihilation with atomic and molecular systems. Refer to the article in New Scientist

Positronium binding to atoms
The Positronium system can also bind to atoms and form a number of temporary short-lived species.

Elastic scattering of electrons and positrons
This is a report being prepared for the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurement (ICRU)

Electron-ion scattering
